An independent school in Middletown, DE for students in Preschool through Grade 8

Allergy Awareness

St. Anne’s recognizes the increasing prevalence of food allergies in our student community and is committed to providing a safe environment for all. We are a peanut- and tree nut-aware facility and ask families to avoid sending peanut or tree nut products in lunches and snacks out of respect for students with severe, life-threatening allergies.

Any food brought to share must not contain peanuts, tree nuts, nut oils, or nut-based flours. Additionally, some students have serious allergies to dairy, eggs, lentils, chickpeas, and hummus. Please be mindful of these ingredients when packing food for school and any classroom or schoolwide events.

Even small amounts of an allergen—whether consumed or present in the air—can lead to serious allergic reactions. In some cases, this includes anaphylaxis, a rapid-onset, life-threatening reaction that can severely restrict breathing and requires immediate medical intervention. Several of our students are at risk for such reactions and rely on emergency medications and daily monitoring to remain safe during the school day. To support them, our faculty and staff complete annual training to recognize early signs of anaphylaxis and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

We appreciate your cooperation in avoiding nut products and being cautious with other allergens .

If your child comes home and mentions that a classmate has a food allergy, we encourage you to use it as an opportunity for discussion. Talk with your child about what it means to have a food allergy, how serious allergic reactions can be, and why it’s important to help keep classmates safe. Teaching empathy, respect, and inclusion helps build a caring and supportive community—values we strive to model every day at St. Anne’s.

Thank you for supporting the health and safety of all students.
