October 27, 2019 The Heron Where children are known, loved, challenged and inspired for their future. Head of School Good Day St. Anne's Families,
As I wandered through the St. Anne's Library admiring the preparation for the Book Fair and Tuesday's Family Night, I had a moment of reflection. If it had not been for stories passed down from my relatives, I would not know much about myself and my heritage. I still urge my father to share stories of his childhood in an effort to make connections to the past. In her Ted Talk, The Danger of a Single Story, Chimamanda Adichie speaks of how we limit ourselves and our experiences by not reading and sharing stories.
Regards, "The world is never saved in grand gestures, but in the simple accumulation of gentle, soft, almost invisible acts of compassion every day." ~ Chris Abani To all of families celebrating Diwali, May your Diwali be filled with light, hope, and happiness. First graders, for example, have been diligently practicing with sh, th, and ch sounds most recently. It can be hard to remember not to sound out those letters individually when presented with an unknown word! To activate the reading brain, first grade students engage in daily activities that build phonemic awareness and discrimination.
There are many different ways to to do this practice, but all activities center on "word play"--the building of words by manipulating (adding, substituting, removing) sounds in other words. Students also learn to recognize rhyming patterns and understand words that rhyme are spelled with the same middle and ending sounds. Each week, our emerging readers add new sounds and patterns to their repertoire. In time, they will become confident readers and writers! An Appreciation of Cultures Sue Kaminksi, Third Grade Teacher
... how people live … what people believe … how people believe … what people eat … what people wear
… are simple and humble … are hard working … are generous ... value family … love their dogs … live in the mountains
The Appalachian Mountains first formed roughly 480 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. They once reached elevations similar to those of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains before experiencing natural erosion.

The etymology of words has always been somewhat fascinating to me. As a scientist, many of the words in my daily vocabulary are rooted in Latin and Greek and understanding these root words provides important insight into their usage and meaning. I thoroughly enjoy introducing complicated science vocabulary to my students; homeostasis, hypertonic, and hydrophillic to name just a few. They love to learn their meanings, and I enjoy watching them laugh as these new and unfamiliar words roll off their tongues. The word science itself comes from the Latin root words 'scire' meaning "to know" and 'scientia' referring to "knowledge".
To know facts about a topic and to know a person through a relationship are two different types of knowledge intrinsically intertwined when you are a teacher. It is here at St. Anne's that I can know and be an expert in my subject area and pass my enthusiasm for science onto my students so that they too know what it means to be a scientist. It is here at St. Anne's that I can spend the extra moment in advisory or in devotions or on an overnight to get to know what motivates my students, what is the best way for them to learn, or what things are important to them. It is the blending of these two senses of knowing that make St. Anne's a wonderful place to teach and be taught.
