What Does Courage Look Like? Valerie White, Lower School Head
What does courage look like for kids? This week in chapel we talked about being courageous, and it got me thinking about how our kids define courage. I decided to ask some students to share some times when they remembered being brave. Here are some of the responses I received:
"When I climbed Camelback Mountain." - 3rd grade "When I missed my dad and had to go to bed without him." - 2nd grade "When I was going really fast sledding down a big hill" - Pre-K "When I went to a friend's house where there was a big dog that I had to walk past." - 2nd grade "When I rode a pony for the first time." - Kindergarten "When I got my flu shot." - 1st grade "The first time I went to a new school." - Pre-K "When I went outside on the playground for the first time." - Preschool "When I jumped in a really cold swimming pool." - 4th grade "When I did an aerial for the first time." - 3rd grade
Often when kids think of courage, they think of brave heroes and feats of strength envisioning superheros and knights in shining armour. Researcher and author, Brene Brown, speaks of courage as "wholeheartedness". She goes on to say, "You cannot get to courage without first walking through vulnerability." In being vulnerable, we allow ourselves to take risks, to try new things and to face some of our greatest fears. We also experience failure and disappointment and learn how to be resilient in the face of this discomfort. All of these skills are critically important for our children to learn and experience as they move through life. I came across an article from US News and World Report that talks about cultivating courage in kids. I encourage you to take a look and think about the kinds of ways you and your child(ren) talk about being brave and perhaps you can share a time when you found your "20 seconds of insane courage" to face one of life's challenges.

After receiving a generous grant from the Michael and Nancy Pia Foundation, whose mission is to make a positive impact on the lives of children, St. Anne's will benefit from further exploration and education of Mindfulness Education and Practice. We will have the pleasure of having Mindfulness educator and coach, Bernadette C. Smith, M.Ed, on campus every Wednesday from September 17, 2019, until early-November.
By its very nature, mindfulness is not something we would insist students or teachers learn and/or practice; however, after our August in-service training with Ms. Smith, 100% of our teachers expressed interest in learning more from Ms. Smith. She will share her extensive experience and expertise with our students, faculty, staff, and parents in varying ways.
Ms. Smith will be leading short 15-20 minute sessions with some of our students in classrooms, meeting with teachers in a mini-workshop setting to learn how to use mindfulness in the classroom, working with faculty and staff at faculty meetings to learn and practice mindfulness themselves, and she will also be available to work with parents. As stated above, when mindfulness is practiced regularly (at school and at home), the outcomes can be very positive.

Blessing of the Animals - October 2 Homework Tips Lisa Bloomfield, Director of Student Learning
Now that opening activities and middle school trips have passed, students are fully immersed in their learning. Teachers are using best practices and engaging their students across all subject areas. Meaningful review and independent practice is also being assigned for daily or weekly homework. Parents can be supportive in their child's homework efforts in many ways. Here are some tips to guide you in your effort to support your child during homework time this year:
If your child is experiencing difficulty with particular homework assignments or in a certain subject area, please contact us. Talk about your concerns with your lower schooler's classroom teacher or your middle schooler's advisor. We are here to partner with you and support your efforts at home! School-wide Service Opportunity Help beautify the Warriors Helping Warriors House in Middletown, DE.
St. Anne's alumna, Anastasia Clair (Class of 2018) has taken on a service project as part of the Children of the American Revolution organization, where she is the president.
My name is Anastasia Clair, and I am a St. Anne's alumna of the class of 2018. I am currently the President of the Delaware State Society, Children of the American Revolution.
This year's State C.A.R. project will consist of installing a Butterfly Garden for Warriors Helping Warriors at the Brian Conley Veterans Center, in Middletown, Delaware. A focal point of the garden will be a bench made out of recycled materials. Trex is a company that will take plastic bags and recycle them to build benches. Over the next six months, the Delaware C.A.R. will be collecting plastic bags throughout the state to complete the 500lb requirement in order to obtain a free bench made of recycled materials. I would like to ask for your help.
Please save your clean bags and bring them to help us reach our goal. The following may be used: grocery bags, bread bags, zip lock, and food storage bags, newspaper bags, cereal bags, produce bags and more. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
